G U Medicine - Lords of Oblivion
Album: Lords of Oblivion
Artist: G U Medicine
Label: Undergroove
Lords of Oblivion, according to the G U Medicine myspace page is a "hot slab of pure molten rock rolling down the side of a volcano towards my house, which is going to crush and burn me"; well thankfully none of that happened after pushing play on my cd player, but I did have the pleasure of listening to 11 tracks of well crafted rock music.
It’s easy to see where the bands influences lie, and that their influences are varied; the opening track for instance gives an impression of classic riffs like a mixture of Black Sabbath and Motorhead, whereas the opening riff for the final track 'The Hangman Has Been Hired' sounds very AC/DC. Overall Lords of Oblivion is a well crafted and varied album which should please metal heads of all ages, but will probably sit more comfortable with fans of classic rock and metal.
Standout tracks on the album are the title track with some excellent guitar work and growling vocals, and is also the longest track on the album clocking in at just over six and a half minutes, as well as track 11 'The Hangman Has Been Hired', which sounds the most polished song on the album with some nice vocal harmonies and closes the album with the sounds of thunder and rain.
I have to say, I like this album, I’m on about my fifth listen now, but cant help feeling that it leaves me wanting more. 'Lords of Oblivion' is one of those albums that you put on when you're not really in the mood for music, but after listening you will probably find yourself wading through your music collection, and to be fair, it will probably spend more time on your shelf than in the cd player, but one you will be glad you gave time to when you do.
So to sum it up Lords of Oblivion is not quite the slab of molten metal I was expecting, but is a good album that will have you coming back for more.
Lords of Oblivion is the third album from the Yorkshire rockers, one which will grow on you a little bit more with every listen.
